
The lawyer of Dr George Akuffo Dampare, Inspector General of Police, Mr. Kwame Gyan, has asked for the three senior police officers implicated in the case to be absent during his client’s testimony in the ongoing investigation into the leaked tape.
Mr. Gyan made this request during the public hearing of Parliament’s seven-member bi-partisan Committee, stating that this wouldn’t affect the proceedings or the integrity of the investigation, emphasizing the importance of a thorough, unbiased investigation. Dr Dampare, the IGP, has been called upon by the Committee regarding events related to a leaked tape and allegations made by two implicated officers.
His testimony will play a crucial role in the investigation. The leaked audio recording, which went into circulation on July 11, 2023, allegedly involves a Police Commissioner and a politician discussing a plan to remove IGP Dampare from office.
This led to the Minority Caucus in Parliament calling for an investigation into the leaked tape. Consequently, the Speaker of Parliament, Mr Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, constituted the seven-member bi-partisan Committee on July 25, 2023, to authenticate the audio and investigate the alleged plot to remove Dr Dampare, IGP from office before the 2024 general elections.
