Rema makes history with MTV VMA win with Selena Gomez, thanks Fela for starting Afrobeats

As the first Afrobeats artist to win at the renowned MTV VMAs show, Rema has achieved a significant milestone.

The Nigerian artist who was in attendance at the awards ceremony, which just ended, emerged as one of the night’s winners at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

At the MTV Video Music Awards, the top-charting song “Calm Down Remix” by Rema and Selena Gomez was named Best Afrobeats Song.

Rema is the first Arobeats artist to win a VMAs plaque, so this is a historic event for him. The Best Afrobeats Song category has just been added to the awards program for the first time.

Excited Rema and Selena Gomez took the stage to accept the award. He added, “Africa in the house tonight… this means so much seeing Afrobeats grow this big and being on this stage representing Afrobeats” in his victory speech.

Rema made the decision to thank the Afrobeats pioneers during his acceptance speech on stage when he remarked, “I’m so happy, but one thing I won’t forget to do tonight is forget to shoutout the people who open the doors for me.”
