Most young people aspire to be medical doctors when they grow up. Surprisingly, most people do not become doctors, so this is a pipe dream for the majority of people.
The prestigious profession attracts only the best students in the country, so competition is fierce.
In Ghana, becoming a medical doctor comes with high expectations. This is due to the limited number of options available in comparison to the relatively high competition.
However, the situation is gradually improving as more medical schools are established to address the issue. One can expect to spend six to six and a half years studying medicine in Ghana.
Who Is Ernestina Mensah?
Ernestina Mensah is a medical doctor who describes herself as determined and focused.
According to Afia Drah, The Trust Hospital’s Communication and Business Development Manager, the doctor began her career as a Community Health Nurse.
Ernestina was described as “fun, loved outings, fashion, perfumes, and all the things you wouldn’t think a typical bookworm would like” by Afia. She was such a fashionista that she named her dog Zara.”
Ernestina was a Community Health Nurse when they met in 2016, according to a LinkedIn post. Ernestina graduated from Central University College with honors as a Physician Assistant a few months after they became friends.
“I was a bit baffled by the PA ship because I knew she was a nurse. And then when some folks on Facebook started an “agenda” that she is “posing” as a doctor, I got curiously excited enough to find out more about her.”
“She would always say she would pursue further to become a doctor. And I told her in 2016 that I will definitely tell the world about her. I loved her determination,” Afia added.
After graduating as a Physician Assistant, Ernestina worked as a nurse and PA “helping out with private practices and fertility specialists, surgeons and various consultants.”
“Then in November 2022, she became Dr. Ernestina M. just like she said to years ago,” Afia Drah stated.
Afia described this as “a story of determination, persistence and purpose.” Adding that Ernestina was not from a mid-upper class family.
Many people congratulated Dr Mensah on Afia Drah’s post while others who know her personally shared more on who she is.
